His body turned into his personal prison
He was a former martial arts enthusiast and engineering student who was paralysed after a car crash in 1983. His body turned into a personal prison, he could only ask and scream for help in his head where no one could hear. After receiving a correct diagnosis Rom Houbens was given a computer to help him communicate. Here are some of the first things he said;
“I was a witness to my own suffering as doctors and nurses tried to speak with me until they gave up all hope.”
“All that time I just literally dreamed of a better life. Frustration is too small a word to describe what I felt.”
Houbens remains in constant care at a facility near Brussels.
